Banshee crank
#1
I just bought a 99 banshee and it's in the shop getting some engine work done on it. The cylinders and pistons were in bad shape, and it has been bored to 377 i think. I'm having it resleeved back to 350 for reliablility reasons, and I'm getting new pistons. The problem that I'm having is that the crank has too much clearance. This is better than it being too tight, but still, it's not where it should be. I was wondering if this would effect anything. The person who is fixing it isn't positive what this would do. I get the impression that it would be ok, but I don't want to risk anything. If he fixes it or replaces it it's going to cost another 2 or 3 hundred dollars, and I'm not sure if it is even worth it. Does anyone know what a crank with too much clearance would effect? Is it even worth putting all of the money into?
Thanks

My friend, who has a shee, said it should be ok but instead of going back to stock bore you should consider .20 or .50 over, it makes nice power he has his at .20 and it sure does fly plus he says maintence is pretty much the same as stock. Anyways he said it should be fine if its not over kill...
Might i add here is a forum on some crank mods.... lol Here

When it comes to crank bearings, a little bit of play is WAY too much.
Edit: Reply to the post before me seconds before me: It is STUPID to put a stock bore sleeve in and then bore it bigger! You are just wasting the sleeve. Anyone who says they have more power (noticeable power) by boring theirs .020", .050", or even .080" is full of ****.

OK, by too much clearance what do you mean? Up and down bearing clearance, or rod big end side clearance? The rods will move side to side even on a new crank, but there is limits. A 99 shouldnt have too many problems unless it's been abused.
Also I wouldn't worry about reliability of one bored to maximum.

Bubba, I've shelled 2 '99 cranks. Both just piped bikes. He is right about side clearance vs. up and down. I was just thinking the mechanic would know the difference and not be worried about side clearance.
And I know of a 65 HP banshee that was raced every weekend and is now trail riden at .090". You can take a banshee to .100".
