Yeah, if you are alone, the winch will serve you better. Maybe not near as often, but the chance will come where you will wish like hell that you had it. I rarely ever use mine, but it bailed me out once when I was stuck in a half dryed out lake at 4:00 in 50 degrees and nobody around. Actually, that was like 6 years ago yesterday. funny.
Mudding with friends, a tow rope is normally a lot quicker, but by yourself, the winch can save you a lot of digging. I've dug quads out a couple times with my freakin hands and it was not fun. (sadly enough, there was nothing nearby to winch to)

As already said with these machines a winch is a must have piece of equipment, all you need to get is a 2000 or at most 2500 lb winch. Although there is an alternative to the winch which is a hand come-a-long and a couple of sturdy tow straps to give you at least a 50ft reach. Not the easiest or fastest way to do it but it will work, although with the winch you can work the winch and throttle at the same time and with the come-a-long you can't.
Wichever way you choose please place something over the cable or strap when pulling to reduse the risk of injury if the cable should break or come loose and fly back towards you.
