Well, top speed for a stock wolverine is in the mid 50's... plenty fast enough to get hurt on, which brings me to your second question.
Fit for a 13yr old.. well, if you have enough experience with other quads or wheelers, it will likely be fine. As a first machine, I think something smaller might be better. Either way, a safety class if you are a new rider is a must. If you completely respect a machine and the harm it can do to yourself or others and never forget that fact, then it will treat you right. Forget to respect it, and it is guaranteed to hurt you or someone you are riding with.
The steering is relatively light compared to other 4wd models out there. Key thing to remember is that if you are riding along and the edge of the trail cups upward, letting the front tire ride that edge will end up with the front end climbing up... it will not just rub along it like a 2wd machine will. Those front tires will grab and pull towards the edge of the trail. A skilled rider will know how to prepare for it as well as do his/her best to keep it from happening.
The above may sound as if the wolverine is not a good bike for a 13yr old but that's not what I am saying. If your father is thinking of getting you one, he should have a machine of his own and the two of you can hang together, take the safety class together, and as a team, determine what you are ready for and what your limitations might be.
Good luck, I hope this helps.

Funny you say this. I am 13 years old turing 14 in a month. I am a small 5'1 100 pound kid. I have a wolverine. The top speed of it is about 55-60 depending on weight and im sure thats not a factor with you. It fits me perfectly and I like the size because it is small. I like it because I ride my brothers rubicon and uncles prairie all the time and those are big sized and the wolverine is perfect for me. The steering is excelent even though its an full time 4wd it handles and steers really well.

04 Honda Rubicon
03 Kawasaki Prairie 360
01 Yamaha Wolverine, FMF pipe, K&N air filter, warn 1500 whinch, Maier hand guards, moose fender extensions, oxlite boot guards and more..

Rebel,
I think the wolverine would be a good quad for you if you have a little bit of experience. If you don't the wolvy could still be good for you, just be careful. It goes good especially if you are small ( probably closer to 60). IMO it is the best handling 4x4 out there. Another thing is it will fit you for a long time. I am 6'2'' 225 and my wolverine still feels very comfortable even with the post highschool weight gain. There are also many mods you can add at your own leisure. Have fun and hopefully you and your dad can ride together.
