It seems rather obvious that a 12 tooth sprocket may be the way to go to deal with too high 1st and 2nd gearing on the Raptor...has ANYONE found out if the Banshee or Warrior front sprockets will fit? If not, does anyone know where to source the correct one? Has anyone actually fit up a 12T and found out how it does by comparison? I'm betting that the top end may not suffer too much because the motor may be able to rev out closer to the 9000 rpm limit...what do you all think? Also, it appears that there is no room between the rear sprocket and swingarm skid to fit up a larger rear sprocket...I was thinking about going with a 41T banshee rear sprocket on the rear to slightly lower gearing. Don't know if anything bigger would fit. Maybe an aftermarket swingarm skid from PRM would provide more clearance. (By the way, I talked to them and these will be available in about 3 wks. time.)Anyone's thoughts, comments, or experience on this subject would be appreciated!
P.S.: Has anyone looked into an aftermarket exhaust yet? I understand White Bros have thier E-Series canisters out now.

I was wondering if anyone has tried shockwears from a banshee, to see if they fit the raptor's shocks? A black set would look really nice!

First things first, man! Let's get this sprocket thing worked out before we talk about shockwears!
Anyone???

I think I have figured out Yamaha's intensions with the gearing on the Raptor. Yamaha took the opposite approach that Bombardier took to INTENSIONALLY limit the performance. Bombardier chose to put a very restrictive pipe on the DS650 to INTENSIONALLY kill the lowend power for safety reasons. They also INTENSIONALLY killed the topend speed by gearing the DS650 very, very low and relying on the rev limiter to cut you off at 75mph. Yamaha on the otherhand INTENSIONALLY geared the Raptor very, very, very tall, killing the lowend for safety reasons. The top speed and acceleration is limited by the gearing/torque. Yamaha chose to let the motor rev to 9000RPM(with gearing change) and have a better stock exhaust/caburetor setup than the DS650.

The fix for the problem is a simple gearing change. I think a 12 tooth front sprocket is about right.

Raptor with 13/40 Gearing: 1st gear overall ratio = 15.6 (way too tall!)

Raptor with 12/40 Gearing: 1st gear overall ratio = 16.9 (about right, about the same 1st gear overall ratio as a 17/38 geared DS650 which is what I run)

Raptor with 12/45 Gearing: 1st gear overall ratio = 19 (about equal to stock DS650(16/40 gearing) - I don't recommend this, gearing is too low)

For the hill shooting problem a flatside carb w/acceleratior pump and a pipe will help.

Good luck!

I agree with you on the gearing Scooby. The gearing of the Raptor is no-doubt an effort to tame the machine. A plus with the long gearing and big torquey motor is less shifting at trail speeds though. Just ride a gear high and apply more throttle when necessary.

That sounds like a winner to me! If there is one thing I hate, it is getting a cramp in my left hand from so much constant shifting on my 400EX when I am in the trails. (FOllowing a bunch of people headed to dinner. We ride 26 to 44 miles twice a month for dinner cruises)

However, when I am ahead of the pack, I don't have to shift as much. (Can keep the power on from the EX)

I plan on riding my Raptor for 180 days before making any changes at all. I want to get used to the way the bike performs stock, so I spend my money in the right places.

I checked with sprocket specialists and they won't have a sprocket ready for the Raptor until they receive a raptor and take it apart. I don't know if anyone else has a sprocket for the Raptor. I checked with the shockwears company and they said that the Banshee shockwears will fit on a Raptor. Shockwears has begun making silver shockwears to match the black/white Raptor.

They do not make the sprocket that will allow the Raptor to kill the DS650, Ain't going to happen until Yamaha learns how to make horsepower and torque, then you dont need the sprocket that can't be made.
Ya'll going to learn one day how much Yamaha loves ya, spend your money.

I would have my dealer contact Yamaha and ask about the front sprocket replacement. There should be something out there that "fits".

Sprocket specialist has a 12T sprocket for the raptor it's # is 504 12, the same as a 99-00 yz.My dealer already put one on Geoff's raptor. But I haven't had a chance to talk to Geoff yet. The mechanic that put it on said it picked it up pretty good on the bottom. I think with a 12t and removing the spark arrester it shold help the low end a lot. But that's just my thoughts. As far as yamaha not knowing how to build a engine with torque and horsepower, have you been trapped in a cave for the last couple of years?
