Hmmm, Let me add my 2 cents.

I needed more airflow with my new pipes. I heard all the same stuff about K&N in the dust/mud/sand. I have actually seen a K&N hurt a Wolverine before! So I went with a UNI "foam" filter in the airbox but got rid of the air box lid and went with the K&N powerlid w/ the outerwear on top of it. I saw a huge difference instantly. I have tons of air going through now. The way I see it is, its double filtered unlike just sucking through the snorkles. Aside from being less restrictive the outerwear does a good job against water and the power lid does well agains sand (assuming it got past the outerwear) and the UNI filter never gets dirty. I thought that all this would be over kill. The powerlid is designed to have a regular filter on as well. i.e...... Powerlid w/ outerwear + UNI filter = more air/ better filtration.

Thats just me though.......... I ride in everything!

Hope this helps...... that powerlid is about 120 bucks or so where your foam filter is cheap.

[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif[/img]!! You could possilby restricing airflow with that setup, try taking of the powerlid and just run the outerwear airbox cover! I think your overdoing it abit! IMO

 

i run a k&n air filter that fits in my stock air box. i like the way the filter fits in the box it's very secure to not let anything inside. i ride in south east missouri. where there's sand, mud, trails, logging roads, creeks swamps, everything you could posible ride in. i had a bad experience with my stock filter. after cleaning it four times, it did not want to fit snug and was losing it's original shape. i don't know if every foam filter is like the stock ones but i wasn't impressed by the way it fit and losingh it's shape after four cleanings.
im not totally convinced they are completely secure when installed, i like the k&n due to it breathes better, it's very tuff and don't lose it's shape when cleaned, it filters just as good as any. k&n stands behind their product. there is allot of people who swear by k&n filters for years. it breathes the best for not having to remove my air box lid. i would never remove the lid due to riding in extreme conditions where theres always mud water dirt and everything you can think of that could destroy a motor where i ride.

blindside..... You have the same fear that I had. Just thinking about it it seems complete over kill. The instructions for the powerlid actually say do not remove primary filter. They say the lid is just for more air flow due to removing the snorkle. I added those LTE dual pipes and spent weeks trying to get the jetting right. The power lid setup did the trick. I'm sure I could change the jetting and remove the power lid but after a few rides with this setup in water/mud and dust........ im happy with the power/filtration so far.

I hear you though! So far this works well for me. I'm sure that I could gain some power by having less filters for the carbs to breath through, however I just went from stock to dual LTE's , jet kit and filter......... I don't know what to do with all that power yet. LOL

 

I have ran k&n on everything i have owned and ride in all different conditions and never had a problem, ut im not gonna say nothin bout a foam filter cause ive never really had an experience with one other than a stock one
