it is used mostly by people who race(MX). And it is supposed to start your quad with having to kickstart it.

i'm sorry i was thinking of something else, actually a hot start helps you start a Dirtbike. It fires up the piston. say your dirtbike stalls just press the hotstart lever and it fires right up.b/c more and more dirtbikers are upgrading there cams, valves, and carbs this hotstart makes it easier to start you dirtbike. it fires up the monster inside!

So then this must be a compression release feature like Husky used to use on the older big bore bikes years ago?

A hot start lever is basically a compression release often incorporated into the clutch handle, allowing easier retstarting in gear.

I thought a hotstart lever was used on four stroke dirtbikes to help start them when the motor was hot. If your bike stalls during a race a four stroke sometimes takes several kicks to start. I thought the hot start lever thinned out the amount of fuel going into the motor while kicking it over to help it start faster. This is just what I was told though, don't know if it is fact. Had one on my old Yamaha WR250F bike.

The hot start lever is used when you stall the bike during a race. My understanding is that it allows cool air to enter the engine through the carb providing for easier startup. Supposed to save your leg from kicking so damn much. If you've watched any SX races, you've probably seen the way the kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick to get them started. It's about 75% effective, IMHO. You don't need it on an electric start machine (the battery provides enough oomph to crank it over).
