hello, i've never posted in yamaha before & i've never been partial to yamaha quads in particular, always been a polaris guy. i plan on buying a quad soon & i was/am hear set on an '05 predator, the '05 has reverse, tranny was fixed & so on. but latly i've been thinking & the yfz450 is beyond lookin over. i ride trails & fields, even ocasional mud, but the draw back to predator is the weight, i think that's the singled draw back., plus to yfz450 is light weight & powerful engine, BUT drawback for me are, do u shift on trails a lot? & also does ground clearance come into play & how is the reliability.
-has anyone rode the preddy & the yfz450, & is the difference very noticable a side from weight, also can u take yfz through trails w/o constantly shifting, which i don't want, please let me know & sorry for the lenghtyness.

Well, one nice thing about the predator is it's like 700 dollars cheaper. If you get a predator, I would get the normal one, not the troy lee. The troy lee has a closed ratio gear box, until you hit 5th, which is the same as the other predator, so you tend to bog down. That's what I read anyways... It may not be that bad. This is a pretty hard choice, they are both fast. I don't think I really helped much, good luck on your choice.

never rode a predator but my buddy has a yzf450 and i love it its light and feels really stable plus that things got some wicked power and when riding a 4 stroke u can pretty much pick your gear on and always have power unlike my friends bashee you will be shifting that thing all day... gl and let us know what u do

hey, well personaly I like my 05 predator. It does bog down quite a bit in 5th but good 1st-4th. The ride is alot smoother than the YFZ. Dont get me wrong the YFZ is fast. I usually ride in the dunes. When i went out to dumont no stock beat me. My 05 Predator was stock also. I rode my buddy YFZ it was super fast copared to the stock Pred. He had quite a bit of money in it though. The weight was not a big concern. The steering could have been a little better on on the pred. Other than that I saved $1500 dollors and i think it will be faster

On the YFZ the power and the gearing seem to work in perfect harmony together. Especially when you add a pipe and filter. I highly doubt you will be shifting more than the Predator. The YFZ seems to have this reputation for a "powerband" hpwever in reality it has gobs of torque down low (especially once you do some simple mods) that allows you keep it in one gear plus the overrev is great, much better than the Predator. In a race, its the YFZ hands down. It's lighter, makes more power and the gap widens with every mod. My vote goes to the YFZ 450.
