Default are hyperf. cdi boxes for '01 raptor worth it ?

hey my name is nick

i just bored my raptor 1: over, put a hot cam in it, jetted it and put a ct racing pipe on it. its not even broken in yet and its awesome. i was looking to trick it out some more and was wondering if anyone knew if a high performance c.d.i. box would make much difference. ( or any other suggestions on tricking it out for more h.p.)TextText

For the price of a cdi (400 bucks) you can send your head off to somene like Craycraft, Kenz, etc to get ported. This will yield more power than the cdi, which does not seem to be a worth while upgrade for the vast majority of raptor owners.

And welcome to the forums Nick.

Not a sham, many sell for around 100 bucks. The majority of these just boost the rev limiter to 10k rpm up from 9k. I couldnt hit the rev limiter in anything but first gear with my stage 1 hotcam, and I know that your bike is not going to be making anything close to peak power at 9k rpm, let alone 10k rpm. So that leaves us with timing changes, some boxes have them some dont. Some people say you should advance the timing on the rap, some say retard. It depends on what kind of power you want, but you'll be very lucky to get any change at all.

As for the 400 vs the 100 dollar units, I'm awfully weary about the cheap ones. Why? Well when Pro-com came out with thier boxes they had all kinds of problems. I've had friends with Big gun, SRP, and other cheap units get stranded or have thier riding day ended when one of these boxes fails. Not to mention the possibility of damage to the electrical components on the bike.

So if you buy a cheap one, I have a little advice for you; bring the old cdi with you. IMO the cheap ones havent shown to be quality products and the 400 dollar units are well built and reliable but not worth the money for unimpressive performance gains. I'll probably never put one on my bike, but if I ever did it would be a Dyna or Vortex.

I have two of the DYNA FS CDI's on each of my raptors. One is stock and one is a Craycraft drag bike and I will tell you that they make a difference on a moded or no moded engine. I just had to rejet accordingly but as for my piped and jetted Raptor, it will out race all other piped and jetted Raptors I have came across in the past 6 months since I have had it.

Either way, dont get the low cost 100.00 high rev cdi boxes, I have had them to and they $uck big time.
