Break in requirements
#1
I just purchased a 05 Kodiak 450 SE and am bit confused about the proper break in procedure. Previously I dropped the oil after the first ride or approx 1 hour and then again about 10 hours later. However the delaer explained this is not essential any longer and stated this is right from Yamaha specs, the service manager basically said my first service shouldn't be until well after this. It just doesn't jive with what I have been taught or told so I thought I'd see what you all reccomend.
I pick it up on the weekend so it hasn't been used yet.
Thanks

My break in lasts about an hour. I vary the speed and RPMs, let it heat up and cool down a couple times, then I ride it like I'm going to ride it. After the first tank of gas I change the oil and filter. After that just go with what your book says.
I've been told that the most important thing about break-in on todays motors is heating them up and cooling them down. Just remember, unles your quad had 0.0 miles on it when you bought it, you have no idea how it was ridden before you got it. A lot of mechanics take them for a test ride after puting them together and you don't know if they let them warm up or let the oil circulate or what.
