Let more air in (filter and airbox mods)--let more air out(pipe)-- add more gas (main jet)= more power to spin those new tires.

Default Loss of power on my 2004 Kodiak 450 HELP!

I just recently put a new pipe on my Kodiak. I got a used FMF Powercore IV from a buddy who decided to get a new one for his 400 EX. With some minor mods, the pipe fits very nicely, the new one fits on just below the front of the seat. The power from the new pipe is much better than before, and the sound it awesome, pretty loud. The low end torque is really improved, it pulls like crazy off the line now. I did not lose any top end speed either, about 55 mph with my fat butt in the seat. I did put a new Twin Air Filter on prior to installing the new pipe, but I have yet to re-jet. (Poet and don't know it). After a tank full riding I checked the plug and it seemed to be running rich enough. I always thought mine ran rich anyway, it would backfire when you were slowing down, unburned fuel in the exhaust. I even had my neighbor check the plug just to be sure, he builds sprint car engines for a living, so he knows how to read a plug. I currently have 25 in. tires, but next year hope to go to 26's, I may go to a clutch kit to overcome any loss of power.

Default Loss of power on my 2004 Kodiak 450 HELP!

I would definately start with a clutch kit... See if that helps out enough. I would also check into a performance CDI for the Kodiak. I know they don't improve much on the Grizzly, since it's not to restricted from the get go... but I haven't done much checking on the Kodiak to see if it would help out. I just don't like sticking loud pipes on Ute's, since not a whole lot of people do it compared to sport quads. The extra noise tends to annoy people...

I wasn't sure I wanted a louder pipe on mine either, I had looked into HMF QS1 pipe maybe to keep the noise down a bit, but when a friend was just gonna throw away a pretty nice FMF pipe, I couldn't let it go to waste. Most of the guys I ride with only have stock exhaust on their ute's. We went to Paddy's Bluff in Ky. a couple of weeks ago, and after a full day of riding they were interested into looking in a aftermarket exhaust for their ute's. The sound of it going through the woods is pretty cool in my opinion, much better than stock. I have checked into the clutch kit, about $175 for a EPI. Maybe next year...

The problem with some aftermarket tires is they run bigger than they actually are. The Bighorns, for example, are almost an inch bigger than what's stamped on the sidewall.
