So i tried to retap it, well the god damn tap broke off if the threads ..now i have the tap stuck in 1 of the threads..what do i do now? can i try and take the flywheel off using 2 of the holes, or do i need to use all 3? what are my options..help needed ASAP

i'm guessin that by your description that you're using a 3 arm puller that uses bolts to attatch to the flywheel right? like a steering wheel puller setup right? if one's stripped out and that taps busted in the other then you're screwed a bit, you can't drill out that tap, thats for sure, it's harder then the drill bit, so take your time and drill and tap three new holes a bit over from the original set of holes so you have three new good holes to work with, go get a good high speed steel ground tap, i'm guessin an M6 or M7 thread, not sure what's in yer flywheel, be real gentle tapping the holes, back out a bunch and clear chips as they cut. and defenetly try n keep all chips out of your motor. don't use a plain engine oil for tapping either, get some tapping fluid with your tap, get an OSG brand tap for example, good pro quality stuff. good luck, josh...

Use a punch in the center of the tap and smack it HARD. The teeth should bust off the tap, they are very brittle. Then, after you've cleaned out all the teeth, you can try again to tap it properly. Use lots of lube when you tap, it helps.

one thing on hitting the tap with a punch........... 1) the tap will still be harder then the punch, 2) i doubt that you broke the tap off to leave you a nice flat place to hit it with the punch, 3) bearings don't like hammers, lather, rinse, repeat.... josh...

hey i read this earlyer and didn`t have any clue, but i was sitting down looking through one of my tool books (i`m going to school to be an auto tech) but it`s been a long time since i did my oneway so i can`t remeber but do you have enuff room to get a gear type puller behind it

a gear puller might work too as long as the web of the flywheel is strong enough, give it a try as long as the jaws will fit behind the edge of the flywheel, and if it looks like it's flexing then maybe back off a bit................ josh..........

You can drill the tap out, but it takes a long time. And about five drill bits later, I have done it before. I would also think about takeing it to a good machine shop. Better to let someone else do it that has the proper tools, $50.00 well spent I would say.
