On my '00 Banshee, I installed a 12t front sprocket to make up for the loss in bottom end power from my 22-12-10 Bearclaw tires. Now I am out of chain adjustment. Can I remove a link from my O-ring chain? I've removed links from other chains (not o-ring) but don't want to screw my chain up. Do I need a chain breaker? Anyone have any experience doing this?

Yeah, Rig, I've done it recently. Actually, twice. I was at my dad's, so I had his tools. I don't know about anyone else, but the chainbreaker was a waiste of money. My dad ground the plate, on a regular link, on the pin till it was smooth. Then we just tapped it out with a punch. I've had this problem, though. The chain wasn't a good size. I have a 12 tooth on mine too. It was either too loose or too tight, there wasn't any inbetween. I have also put a new x-ring chain on it, and had to remove a link.

Hope this helps,

Jason

What happens to the oil inside when I remove a link. Obviously it will come out. Should I replace it with something or just leave it. Rottwolf said that chain breakers were a waste of money, any others have experience with them?

I've shortened many a chain. I used to use the grinding method, then I bought a good quality chain breaker, it's well worth the money. I got mine for $24.99 from Dennis Kirk. I wish I would have bought it long ago.

yeah, you need to re-oil your rings before you put them back on. Maybe my chain breaker was a cheap one? But it didn't push the pin out of a link for me. And it was a pain..I had to twist the handle to push the pin, it sucked.

Later,

Jason
