I've had the same thing happen to my 2005 Kodiak 450 in the winter. The manual said it takes a few seconds before it fully engages. Once I hit the diff lock on and waited about 10 or so seconds it stopped blinking and it was ok.

when you press the difflock button can you hear the servo motor engaging the locker in the front diff?.....you might have a bad connection that plugs into the servo motor on the front diff.....the 4x4 engagement plugs may be fine but the difflock plugs may be corroded.....take the plug apart and clean it and squirt some die-electric grease into the plug and that should do it.....good luck
