Hi-Octane Fuel/Race Gas > YES or NO?

When I used to have 2 strokes I would run race gas through them all the time, esp after I had motor work done I would make sure to run at least 112 octane fuel.
Now that I have a Raptor is running 100 octane fuel necessary or can I run regular 92 octane pump gas? Or should I go back to the race fuel (112)?

With no mods you can run pump gas only. When using high compression you do need the higher octane gas. usually in my raptor I run 92 octane but 87 octane doesnt even seem to make a difference. If you ever port or raise compression you can mix half 92 octane and half 110 or 112 octane to get around 100 octane.

VP Racing fuel is 110-112 octane, there are a couple of places that I know sell it over here.
Its very expensive though, I would rather use Unocal 100 Octane, it is cheaper.

lots of drag strips or racing shops carry race fuel. or a good source of fuel is airports they have 100 octane fuel and sometimes higher upto 114 octane. I dont reccomed additives like 104 octane boost or the like as people tend to mix more than whats needed to try and get higher octane, It doesnt work to gain more octane, the additives just gum up everything. But anyways usually only fully ported and high compression engines need that kind of octane

You probably wouldn't realize any benefit by running 112 octane gas. All octane does is slow down the burn. Its necessary for high compression engines so you don't get detonation. But for your Raptor it would really just be a waste of money. My bike has 11.5 to 1 compression, and all I have ever used is 92 octane gas. Never heard a ping or knock.

When I bought a new 99 Big Bear, I was running 92 octane gas in it. It ran terrible. I called the dealership, and they asked me what kind of fuel I was running in it. I told them 92 octane, and they told me that Yamaha 4-strokes were made to run 89 octane tops. I drained the gas, filled with said octane, and it started running like a champ. I know the Big Bear is a far cry fro the mighty Raptor, but it's something to think about.
