they are worse than yamaha. Now they 450r'ize all of their quads. And i thought yamaha was bad when they Raptorized almost all of their quads, lol. That was a confusing set of sentances.

i dont see how any1 can say the outlaw is a marketing gimic, or its only going to be a strict gncc racer. have u ridden it yet? no, neither have i. the only way ill be able to tell if i like the irs is if i ride it. it could ride stable, soaking up all the bumps, keeping as much traction as possible or it could be a tippy, ugly steering thing. honestly if polaris put alot of R&D, then this is going to raise the bar of atv's. but until i get to take a spin on it, i dont know how its going to ride.

Damn you guys got a ton of mini off subject posts going

Octane:
First as it was stated earlier you will not see any advantage to running a higher octane than your engine actually needs. The only way to determine this is to reduce the octane to where it shows any signs of detonation and then raise it just slightly.

The reason different engines can run different octane fuel is because were comparing the rated comp or piston rating and not the ACTUAL TRUE COMPRESSION. These are very different and I have seen engines that were producing compression well below the piston rating (more info is avail if anyone wants it etc).

Its on a street bike but there is good info on the effects of octane here ooh ooh click me

IRS:
Have to agree with the observations on the current util atv posted earlier and none have really looked or shown to be great handling, but lets not forget that there not designed for it either.

If you really look at the idea or purpose of IRS it only makes sense that it would be a better performer if set up correctly (still to be seen with the new model, but most who have rode it seem to think its a great start) and if you look at our closest racing machines that use IRS or even the high end sports cars with that set up its obvious it has many advantages over a straight axle.

The corvette, jaguar, mercedes, ferrari, and just about any other sports car I can think of or its racing version uses the IRS, and they all have had their share of success with it as well.

Simply put it allows the vehicle to maintain a more constant power deliver thru the tires being firmly on the ground more often, and also enhances handling because the suspension can be more of a live set up. Live meaning that with proper stabilizing forces applied to one side during turning can actually help both sides to maintain a better contact with the road or trail etc.

I still have not rode the polaris with the IRS but do look forward to it as I had actually put some thoughts on paper and drew up a couple sketches for an IRS for use on an atv a couple years ago, guess it had more potential than I thought since I threw it in a drawer someware lol.

For the new changes on the 06 450r I think you guys are really missing what was done and how its going to effect the handling, acceleration, racing results, and most importantly to the mfg the sales for the model.

I dont care if it added 20lbs the elec start is going to sell additional units end of story. I cant count all the potential buyers I have met that were totally turned off by having to actually put any effort into starting the thing. Right or wrong there will be more buyers.

They did make changes to the engine, and hopefully the new carb will make a real difference (is that an fcr40?) but the increase in compression if its as much an increase in actual comp as it is in the ratings will make a very large difference especially in the bottom end to mid. They also got away from the longer stroke engine (the atv had a longer stroke than the crf did for some reason) which will also change how the engine revs etc.

Still I think the engine changes as much a deal as they are will not be as big a deal to those who were modding the engines anyhow since most who were racing changed most of whats been changed etc.

The big things from what I can see were changes in the suspension and length. It now has a longer wheelbase (should make it less prone to wheelie and better balanced) and changed the set up on the rear swinger which they claim also increased travel in the rear. I dont know exactly what was done and if it also addressed the other issues with it kicking etc, but I do know just from the little I have seen of the 06 that is has a stance that is lower and more similar to the 250r than it was before.

It all looks like good things to me, and if you favor the yfz or 450r everytime one of these companies improves their model it only pushes the other to do better etc, and were the winners!!!

When you think of either of these models and the changes we have seen since the 400ex was first released in 99 its making our lives a lot easier. I know many of the internal engine mods I had to do on the 440 could be passed up and the $$$ used elseware on either of these atvs since power isnt realy as much a concern since they do well with basic intake and exhaust mods.

So pick your poison and have fun
