Default 2 stroke or 4 stroke??

LMFAO, how ironic. Youve never heard of a two stroke diesel? well they exist. My granpas last bluebird RV was a detroit diesel 500 horse 2 stroke. Now idea what displacement except that the turbos were about the size of basket *****. Geee I wonder if it had any torque. And go read about the 700+cc two stroke singles that dont rev past like 5000 rpm but make a boat load of torque (they cant rev higher because of vibration issues).

yeah I was about to say, what about 2 stroke diesles? Does any one know how they run, like did you have to mix oil with them and did they have a big power band hit like atv's and things.

Im not totally sure but I think they have valves. The one in my granpas RV was pretty weak until the turbo came on but no powervalve since I dont think it had expansion chambers. I dont rememeber anything at all about oil at all other than the rotella heavy duty motor oil so I assume it lubricates the same as fourstrokes.

Notice it has an exaust valve and the mix never goes in the crank case so I assume they lubricate the bottom end.

doesn't sound much like a 2 stroke - it has valves, and has oil in the crankcase like a 4 stroke, and no expansion chambers - sounds like a 4 stroke to me

Well, an expansion chamere isn.t reguired on a 2-stroke. Look at a chain saw. But yeah, if a motor has intake and exaust valves, its a 4-stroke. As for a 2-stroke design not being able to make low end torque, what if a company made a 2-stroke motor that hit the power band at 100 rpm. How's that for low end torque.

Its a two stroke because it goes boom every time the piston comes up. Nothing to do with valves or the crankcase. It just uses a turbo to make up for the crank case compression and pipe. More expensive but think about it, you get to have a properly lubricated crank and the powerband isnt limited by the geomety of the pipe, only the spool up time of the turbo. Think about it, all the pipe is - is a turbo, get rid of it and theres no reason not to have valves (exhaust valves would jack up the exhaust wave of a pipe).
Anywho, yeah you can put a pipe on to make torque ANYWHERE you want to. Just if you make all your torque at low rpms then you got no hp.

what if? I never rode a 2 stroke in my life that had as much low end torque as my honda recon had, much less a real sport quad. Nobody has ever made a 2 stroke that has a lot of low end power because 2 strokes can't make low end power without losing top end power and narrowing the powerband. It's just a given that a 2 stroke atv or dirtbike doesn't have as much low end torque as a comparable 4 stroke model.

Your exactly right recon99. But if a company wanted to make a 500cc 2-stroke, that only reved to say 5000rpm, and came on the pipe at400 rpm, it would have lots of lowend torque. Obviously this will never happen as 2-strokes for atv's are dead, but take a look at the boating world, where 2-stroke outboard motors have as much low end torque as 4-stroke outboard motors.

Ok you made me dig up an ancient article http://www.off-road.com/dirtbike/nov00rsMaico760.html
26hp at 1200 rpms. I have no idea how much torque that equals but its alot. That and its ancient so the port design probably wasnt efficent. Would be making a lot more these days.

*edit, I did some math, my math says 113.7 ft lbs of torque. Beat that with a 760cc fourstroke lmao. Imagine if it was a modern high compression computer port desiged motor.
