Raptor 660r Chain Guard Broke
#1
My brothers Raptor's chain came off a while back.. it bust ed one of the bolts off.. so it cant mount back to the engine case... now the chain cam off again and busted the other one off.. so now there's no chain guard and no way to bolt in a new one cause the bolt holes are busted out..... waht can be done?? are there aftermarket chain guards that bolt on another way??
Now this is the gaurd thats up by the engine and if the chain comes off again.. its probably gonna damage the engine case...
I need some help ASAP...
give me some info.. a link or something
thanks..

You've got only one option, weld it back together. If you dont have the ears that fell off, well then you're in more of a predicament but it can still be fixed. Wont be real cheap either way though unless you or someone you know has the tools and skills to weld aluminun.

Well if its possible to weld something to the engine case.. then i can just have a custom chain guard welded in place to keep the chain from damaging the case..
no i dont have both ears.. or the things the bolts screw in to.. its screwed up..
why did it brake so easily... i mean that chain guard or case saver whatever is already designed to prevent the chain from damaging the case.. but why have it screwed into the case like that and then when the cahin does come off...it all breaks... i know u can order those new parts.. but it dont make sense cause it wont screw in..... what the heck was yamaha thinking when they designed that.. i would have used the bar from the frame thats adjacent to it to position a bracket to mount a guard.. then if the chain came off.. broke the guard.. u could easily replace it... BUT NO!! stupid yamaha.. glad i have a Honda..
THeres a local welding shop in town, 2 of them actually.. and one of them has done plenty of work for me before.. on my trailer, i am sure when i come out with a final solution, if it involves welding.. they can help.. and do it cheap too..
My brother had a damaged a-arm.. the cert was bad and the slot where it screwes in was stripped out.. so they cut that eye out.. welded me a new one on.. and tapped it out for the cert.. u can hardly tell its been modified... works like a charm.. and they did that for me for $25
Anyway.. if you come up with any ideas i'd apprecaite it...

If you hardweld a case save to the case you could have clearance issues not to mention what might happen if the chain breaks again and damages the permanent case saver. The top ear is weak, its been noted quite a few times. Its not surprising that the lower mount broke when running a case saver only on that bolt, it wasnt designed for that kind of strain and its really not yamaha's fault. My top ear broke and I got it welded back on. I've been running an aftermarket case saver on the new weld for a year with no problems, but no broken chains either.
Imagine how pissed you'd be if you cracked your case and couldnt ride the bike after the first chain break. How upset you would have been to know you had to reweld that to get it going again, or worse buy new cases for a grand. The case saver is a buffer against severe damage, but that doesnt mean nothing will go wrong when your chain breaks. Proper chain care is important and will stop the vast majority of these problems. As for now you have 2 choices, have a shop fab up some new mounts or run without it and repair or replace your cases when it breaks next time. Thats just the way it goes.

Ok I took the Raptor to the Yamaha shop.. they said its prob due to chain tension.. and they noted that the sprockets are worn.. and the chain is stretched.. so Its time for New Sprockets and a new chain.. so about $130 or so..
Like i said.. its not my Raptor. its my brothers... he said he will have to get it fixed over the winter... so time to store it till then... besides he is saving up for a truck now..
But i did take it to a shop..they are going to fabricate something thats attaches to the fram bar there and will act as a case saver and a mud guard and is unboltable.. so it can be removed to replace the sprocket etc..
Hopefully this solves that problem for good...
After that.. it gets stored in my shed.. prob till next summer....
THANK GOD my HONDA is still operational.. lol HONDA RULES..
Anyway.. thanks for the advice..... check my site later for pics of the fabrication.. if its a good one.. it might be something other riders might do...
Peace out

Oh and RaptorOwner.... i got many questions for you bout ur raptor...
Ever Had any probs with your parking brake?
Whats that long screw for thats coming out of the brake fluid box.. this one is bent!?
THe stock a-arm skid plate is crapp... rubbng against the chain.. possible why it came off.. and its missing a screw/bolt.... and still got a damaged brake rotor....replaced that.
How often does ur fan kick on???
What to do when the rear metal braket that attaches to the plastic comes off with that piece of small plastic.. tried to jbweld it.. didnt work..
i can show u a pic if necessary.
is an airbox cover necessary with a KN air filter....?? i cant get the original lid to go on with it... i would like a lid for when we go thru mud n water..etc.
when u change the oil.. how do u drain it out of the oil box... do u use the bolt hole in the middle underneath.. or do u disconnect a hose?
tell me if this oil change procedure is right
drain crankcase... drain oil resivor.....put on new oilfilter.... fill oil resirvor....start engine?? for a sec... then put more oil in resivor?
i hope to god thats right.. thats somewhat what my bro was told..so thats how i did it...seems to work fine...
thanks for your help
