the banshee is not a good trail bike it needs to fly on straight aways if u want a trail bike that can fly in tight spots i like the blaster. its short wheel base and low torque get it through the trail like nothing u can smoke a banshee and any raptor in tight trails once u hit a straight away the blaster is in the dust.

for trails you need more lowend power and we all know the banshee stock is lacking in this area.
get a 2 into 1 carb setup and a 2 into1 exhaust pipe and regear and you should be ok.just got to get the mods for more lowend power.but its mostly the ridders skill level thats the biggest factor if you can ride the banshee in the trails.
how old is your son?has he ever rode a 2 stroke?going from the z250 to the banshee will be nite and daydiffernce.
i made the move from the raptor 660 to the banshee, the raptor was a great quad still is. lowend lots of power i could take it through trails and hills and it was a lot easyer to ride .lugged better but the banshee just has that feel to it.that powerfull powerband hit .theres nothing like it.any quad can go about anywhere you want to. its how you get there thats the real choice.theres just something magical about the banshee powerband

this was your rude post when answering someone else's banshee question on another post..
But to answer your question... How old is your son? what is his training and abilities? That info will help you decide if he is ready to move up to the 400 class machine.. You are the parent, you decide.. If So... my suggestion would be.. Z400

Life will be easier with another Z. Between my brother and I, we usually have a decent selection of spare parts and since we ride the same model ATV, everything fits. It is nice because we can bring one extra set of tires/wheels, maybe some extra cables, jets, plugs, whatever. It just condenses what needs to be packed for trips and such. Also, from the size of your son, he sounds like maybe a young teenager? The four stroke will be more forgiving in chassis/handling/suspension/maintenance/etc...
