so I am thinking about not getting a sport quad anymore, instead I want something that is more reliable then my jeep for transportation in the spring and summer months, I was thinking about getting a crotch rocket instead.

Now mods before you remove this thread, I want yamahas opinion on it...

is the R6 a good bike for a semi n00b? I have had some experince with dirtbikes in the past...but not a lot...can anyone help?

Before you ask if it is a good starter bike you need to ask your self how throttle happy you are. If you are throttle happy then no, because even 600s are very fast. For a starter bike you should buy something that is used and not to expensive, because most people dump their bikes once or twice when they first start out.

Just be sure you dont get throttle happy on those things. on fri. a kid from my town bought one, and on saturday night, he tried to show off at a stop sign and the bike spat him out right into a tree and killed him...

Visit sportbikes.net.
HUGE forum. (sometimes there is 1000+ members online at a time)
I will warn you though, put your flame suit on if you ask this question over there.
Words like "crotch rocket" and R6 for first bike.....

I have lots of bike experience, so ill give you my take.

If you have lots of dirt bike experience, then an older R6 would probably be fine. They dont make much power below 8 grand, so you cant get into any trouble
down in the lower RPM ranges. But, after that they are very.. VERY fast. (yes even 600's) I believe the 2000 R6's redline at 15000 RPM.
New ones redline at 16,500.

I would recommend a YZF600R, (still very fast) or better yet, a Suzuki SV650. My buddie has one, and I love it. Best part, it was 5800 brand new.
It has 650cc 90 degree V-twin, 6 speed, very comfortable riding position, lightweight, analog screen for odometer, speed, coolant temp ect.
Totally awesome bike for 5800 brand new. I highly recommend that bike.

Anyways, thats my advise to you.
(ive had a few bikes, CBR600, ZX7R (750), R1, RC51) and ridden many more.

I'd start out on something cheap.
that way WHEN you drop it you can just push it in the gutter and go buy another
man I can't tell you how nerve racking the first 1000 miles on a street bike are...there are lots of lessons to be learned...take an instruction class if available where you live...while most of it is repeat info there are some good things to learn
Good luck
My first street rod is a 81 Yamaha XJ550 Maxim...having fun on it and I don't care if it falls

So most of you are saying that the yzf600 would be better for me?

I am not looking for somethign that is extremly fast, but something that has the get up and go that I like. I HIGHLY doubt I will ever hit about 8 grand when riding, most of it will be highway driving anyways. I am thinking about getting a bike because I need a more reliable form of transportation that is also better on gas then my 88 jeep.

I thank all of you for your input
