Shee not firing well on right side?
#1
Hey all! I have a 97 Shee that would always run a little crappy, wouldn't idle, and smoke on the right side some. Had cylinders bored and put pistons in. Starts on 1 kick, idles great, but right side smokes and doesn't seem to hit well. I put my hand on the exhaust and the left side pushes a lot out, is hot, and clears up quick. Right side smokes, misses, and at certain rpm pretty much stops putting out. You can hear the left side firing through the exhaust but lean to the right and it very sporadic if at all. I pulled right side wire while running and it died. I shifted the coil wires over and it started and run the same(I didn't think it would start or run unless I actually swapped the wires). I have read all the threads about right side crank seal but why would it not be hot, missfire, or simply not put out at certain rpm? Also, the compression is the same on both sides. It has Kool Head, FMF pipes and silencers, new stator, the carbs have been rebuilt, the jets are at 330 (K/N filter bolted w/lid off), plugs are new, mix is 40:1. Any thoughts or better theory for an ex-Honda/Acura mechanic? Love the Shee but only running on cylinder and half it seems.

Thanks Mark. Checked the choke tube and it's connected. TORS was disconnected before I bought the quad. At first, it made sense that maybe the coil wasn't firing strong enough to burn off the fuel but with the wire swap... I don't know. Maybe a bad carb? If I rev it up real slow and feel exhaust it will put out ok, I can feel the missfire, then once it hits the band, the left side really puts out and the right is almost null. Weird.

Hmm...that's a thought. Maybe it's flooding due to bad height or sticky float? I didn't switch out the coil wires but just unplugged them from s. plug and swapped. Didn't think that was possible considering timing of spark, but it started but ran the same. That would eliminate both a bad wire or cap and bad coil wouldn't it?

My shee did that at one time, but only right off idle.It was a clogged pilot jet that caused it. If you swapped the plug wires and it still does it you probably can plug off the choke tube holes and swap the carbs to see if the problem jumps to the other cylinder. You are sure it has new plugs right?Did you check the reeds on that side? If all else fails go to bansheehq.com and do a little research, lotta good info over there.

Thanks guys. I have already tried swapping coil wires from side to side and still runs the same which tells me its not a bad wire or half of coil. I will try swapping the carbs and see how that goes. May just be a bad one. You mentioned reeds... there a chance a bad reed or slightly open reed could cause this? A thought because of how the right side puts out differently based on rpm. Doesn't make any sense how I can hold it up higher rpm and RS just drops off on exhaust output but left gives out more. I'll try the carb swap w/choke plugged and see what happens. Thanks for putting in the feedback because I got brain freeze on this now. I'm sure you've been there.

I had the same problem a while back. It turned out to be the crank seal on the right side was bad. It was letting oil into the right cylinder causing the right cylinder not to fire properly unless I ran it wide open. Just a thought.

I am ordering the crank seals today. It is in need of a clutch so might as well do it right. I will do that and go through the carbs while I'm waiting for parts. Thanks guys for the replies. You gave me some things to check and work on.
