Default Carb Help

I'm needing some help with this carb. My buddy and I picked up a used 2002 Raptor 80 for his son. It's going to be his x-mas gift this year so I'm trying to get this straight before the big day comes.

Anyway, It's having problems with a cold start. It can take 20 to 30 minutes to start it. Once it's warmed up it's fine on the restarts.

Here is what I have done so far to the bike. I've checked the compression, changed the plug, cleaned out the carb several times, tried all 3 needle positions, the jets are stock, gone through the whole proccess of adjusting the air screw and idle screw sevearl times, checked the cable, all electrical stuff, the valves, and the cam. All of this is in good shape. After tuning the carb a bit I did notice that it started a little better than before but it's still a major issue.

I have noticed that there is a lot of gas spraying out of the intake on the front of the carb. I had the air intake hose off while I had it in the garage and found that if I put my hand in front of it my fingers will get wet from gas spray when I rev it. The choke plate moves freely and seems to be working ok. It always acts like it's flooded out when I try to start it and I'm assuming that the gas coming out of the front of the carb has something to do with it.

I'm not a carb guy really so any insight would be great.

Thanks
Dave

Default Carb Help

The intake valve is adjusted too tight. That would cause a difficult cold start, and cause the carb spitting the wrong way. It should show up as low compression too. What was the compression?

Default Carb Help

Ok, went out there today and went through the whole thing again. The info I had on the valve clearance was wrong. I found what it was supposed to be, .005 and it fired right up. Good call on the valves. Anyway, the bike is running great now and purrs like a kitten. I'm sure my buddies kid will have a great x-mas now.

Thanks for all the help,
Dave

You did a good job describing the problem. About the only thing to cause the carb to spit backwards is a partially open intake valve.
