Default Kodiak 450 Back Firing

i have a 2005 kodiak 450 and it has been back firing since i got it... it seems like i have the problem fixed and it starts to do it again. the deal said it could be just dirt in my gas but i put a fuel filter on it. i tried putting a jet kit in and couldn't seem to get that to work right so i went back to all stock settings and parts.

another problem i have, is lately when i start it, it seems to start smoking about a minute after it is started. smokes for a few minutes then stops.. it smells and looks kinda like antifreeze, but i have checked the head for cracks or warpage and put a new head gasket in...

any help on either one of these problems would be greatly appretiated. thanks in advance

Steven

When does it backfire...coming off the throttle, or going on the throttle or all the time?

have you had your vavles adjusted like your manually says to after 100 hours or so.... Also check your timming.... The smoke what color is it? BLUE? if it is blue or grayish blue then it is oil.. If oil it could be the vavles are way way way outta wack and causing to back fire and burn oil. Also does the enging turn over again (Deisle (I think that is how yoou spell it)) after you turn it off?

when i had the head off to replace the head gasket. i checked the valves and the timing. everything was good. the smoke looks white almost. thought that it was antifreeze.. but i don't know where it could be leaking from. i'm starting to get fed up with this and almost wanna trade it in. hope someone can help me out here. If it backfires on throttle let off...the idle circuit is lean.
Are you using pure gas?(dont use ethenol blended crap).
Any intake or exhaust leaks?
If everything else checks out, then turn the mixture screw, out (richer), 1/4 to 1/2 turn.

Hows the anti freeze level in the overflow tank?

all the joints for intake and exhaust seem to be tight i willl have to check all of them... i have richened it before and it seems to be to rich and still backfire.. i will try it again though. maybe try a new plug. the antifreeze level seems to go down a bit which makes me think its leaking.
