Are there little nuggets of aluminum in your combustion chamber? Are the piston skirts cracked? If you skirts are cracked and your cylinder is fine except for light scratches, all you need to do is get it bored over and a new piston/ rings. $250 at the most to fix it.

You never mentioned checking anything. But the first things you SHOULD have checked is:
1) does it have spark?
2) is it getting gas into the cylinder?
3) does it have enough compression?
All of that should have been checked way before tearing the top end off. It might have been something like the switch has corroded. (no spark) You need to check the basics first!!
