County Plow Worth It?

Quadfather; I just installed a 60" county plow on a 99 Sportsman 500. I bought the blade and push tubes a month ago but the mounting bracket was back ordered. I got tired of waiting, so I welded up my own mounting bracket.
I operate mine with a winch. It works great. If you told your salesman that you have a winch and he still tried to sell you a lift kit, find a new dealer,or talk to his/her boss.
My 2000# Warn winch raises the blade in about 1.5 seconds! If that is to long to wait, I'd hate to see you in line at the DMV.
The only thing I might add is a remote winch switch on the handlebars, so you don't have to reach down on the fender to operate it.
Enjoy your new "tool", but don't let on that you're having any fun because someone is likely to try and take it away from you.
Now , Bring on the snow.

Quad father;
It just came to me that you may be talking about the type of winch used soley to operate the plow blade. If this is the case ,I would suggest you put that money towards a real winch. That way you can operate your plow and also get your machine(or someone elses) unstuck.
How do tou like the Kodiak so far. I was very close to buying an '01, but found a killer deal on a '99 Sportsman 500.
I was impressed with the 400's power and sporty feel after taking one on a short test drive at a local shop.
If I can swing it I'd like to get a second machine. Let me know what you like or dislike about it.

I told the salesman that I would be using the winch mainly for the blade lift, so he told me to stick with the manual lift. In two years of riding, I have never neede a winch. I feel it would be another one of those hardly used $379 novelty items that never gets used. I can get the whole plow setup on sale for $359.
I love the Kodiak. I almost bought the Sportsman, but wanted something a little nimbler on the trails.

I picked up the plow today. It took a couple of hours to install. The directions were really lame, and hard to understand. I just looked at the pictures and winged it. Everything turned out great. I couldn't believe how easily the blade lifts with the manual lift. With my luck, we won't see a single snowflake this year.

I put a manual lift 48" plow on my Big Bear (now with a thief). I never used a winch but would not want one. Mine was a Cyclecountry. Not sure how the others are built but mine was not real heavy duty. Don't get me wrong, it will plow snow. Just don't slam the snowbanks like big trucks do. If you have a very heavy snow up there, it will be easier to plow at about 4-5" a pop. In other words, if you get dumped with 10", try to plow a couple times. Also, manual lets you have more control. Sometimes you may need to pull the blade up just an inch or depending on your drive. Good luck.

I have 50" plow on my Kodiac 2000 and run a 2000lb.pull superwinch with it. It has the pushbutton on the handlebars ans works like a dream. as far as a winch goes if you don't need one sell the quad because you are not having fun.We use ours almost every trip and thats why I bought the winch and you will not believe where you can go with it.Just think of the possibilites of playing hide and go seek quads and 2 winches. LOL Well the tales are endless.

Quad Father,
I have the 60" County Plow on my 98 Grizzly and man can I plow snow. I operate it via a SuperWinch 2000 and it works real slick. The only short coming is that the blade is so heavy that when you start to lift it, the shocks/struts compress 3 or 4 inches before the blade ever comes off of the ground. My maximum lift is about 4" off of the ground. I also installed a handlebar mounted light, because after the shocks compress and the blade is lifted, the blade blocks my headlights. I plowed, and plowed, and plowed last year and my neighboors love me. I have about 650' of driveway to clear myself, and I just couldn't bear to watch my wife shovel it all by hand ;-)

Here is how I figured out what size plow to order. I measured how wide my quad was, to how much of an angle I would be plowing at. I ended up purchasing a 50" Moose County Plow. I just got it last night. I will be using my 2500 Warn winch to raise the plow. I also went with the smaller plow, because I have a lot of sidewalk space to cover.
