Default wierd doubt

Right so I'm the kid thats gonna build a go-kart with an atv engine in it. I was checking around the forums and I ran into quadbart's post on how he put a gsxr1000 engine into his raptor. This is where my doubts come in. The reason why I was looking into an ATV engine was because the can go pretty fast and still climb steep things or get over obstacles fairly easy. Quadbart's engine pulls 230HP. That will make it go very fast in a very short amout of time, BUT will it still have the ability to do serious offroading??

I ask because it would be a heeluva lot cheaper for me to use a street bike engine plus I could go bigger with the money I save but I don't want to scrifice torque in the process.

Thanks

Andrea

What kind of quad engine would you be running and what kinda of street bike engine would you consider running?

I was planning on getting something bigger than 600cc may a raptor 660 (expensive and hard to get) Same thing either way i want to stuff the biggest engine that I can afford without sacrificing speed OR power. Probably if its a street engine ill go 1000ish

If you geared the bike engine way low it'll probably work fine, the biggest problem other than size is that they have very tall and spaced out gears

i think that once i get some metal fabrication skills under my belt i am going to build a go cart chassis that can withstand the punishment... it will pretty much be a side by side with better suspension and a LOT more power... pretty much just a mini dune buggy

Speedy: thats exactly my plan. to build something pretty hard core.

Recon99: How difficult (or expensive) would it be to have one of these engines re-geared? Do you think theres any other options out there that I could consider? I really want a good balance between speed and torque.

Thanks

http://www.klondyke.net/lar456/KartLatestPic.jpg

that is what i am building... except the a arms they use is a 1 to 2

i am going to use pretty much everything off of a 660r

i figured it would cost about $1500 to build.

You wouldn't really have to do anything to the internals, it's just a matter of getting a sprocket combination that gives you a lower final drive ratio. It may be difficult to find a sprocket setup for a sportbike that gives it a gear ratio low enough for off-roading though, so you might end up having to get one modified or custom made by a machine shop.

Why not??

What would you guys recomend? What do you think a good power plant would be for my application. (8ft long go kart, meant for serious abuse, want lots of speed but also lots of power for riding trails and climbing steep hills.)
