WD-40 is great for cleaning stuff and keeping small things lubbed. But for the chain, you would have to put on a lot to make sure it is realy lubbed if it even works, WD might dry up and not woek. I use 3 in 1 & WD for small things and cables, and then 20-50 oil for the chain.

There's a device out there that clamps onto the end of your cable and allows you to inject lube through the cable from an aerosol can, but all my experiences with them resulted in a dry cable and lube in my face. To lube my clutch cable I disconnect it from the throttle assembly on the handlebars, and just drip drip drip the oil onto the end and pull on the cable to get it worked through good. The idea is to get lube all the way through the inside of the cable where all the friction and wear occurs.
