Wolverine electric start problem
#12
I just wanted to update everyone on this.
I was able to remove the cross threaded bolt...which was only cross threaded on the very bottom, but it was also bent. How the previous owner did that, is beyond me! After the mounting bolts were out, I was able to pull the starter right out.
When opened up the starter, I was greated with quite a mess! There was this really odd grease/goo all over the brushes. I'd imagine it was what was left of the brush material that had worn off, mixed with a little oil. It looked like semi dried out grease.
I cleaned the brushes and brush plate with electrical cleaner. I then did the same for the communicator. After that, I sanded the communicator with a bit of 600 grit paper to shine it up a bit. I also cleaned out any gunk in the grooves of the communicator.
I put it together, mounted it and it worked! Hooray! So I guess a good cleaning is all it needed for now. I'm kidna perplexed as to how it go so dirty. All the seals looked pretty good to me. I an only assume a bearing in the starter was maybe overlubed a the factory? I'm not 100% sure.
Oh, the brushplate I ordered was on back order with no ETA. I cancelled the order and ordered just the brushes. Those should arrive next week.

Like earlier posts on this thread mentioned, it can be a flat battery. If the battery is OK, check the terminals on the battery, solenoid and earth are clean and tight. Still no start? Get a 12v test lamp, connect one side to earth and the other to the wire running from solenoid to starter. Ignition on, press start button, if the lamp lights you have a faulty starter, if it doesn't, but the solenoid clicks, you have a faulty solenoid.
