Default KODIAK 450 SPUTTERS AND DIES IN WATER

I think this has been posted before but my 04 Kodiak 450 sputters and misses in water sometimes even quite shallow (10-15 inches deep) usually starts steaming and then starts to stall. In fact I have gotten stuck bad one time because the machine just started to skip and then died halfway through a bad hole. This is very annoying to say the least. I love this quad otherwise. Please help if you have experienced this on another Kodiak and have fixed it. It appears only a handfull of kodiaks have this problem in water. BTW this is not an issue of belt slippage or simply bogging down in the mud as others have suggested. Thanks for any advice.

Hey buddy, I have an 05 Kodiak. The problem that is occuring here is that your air intake coming off the top of your air box is under your gas tank plastic. The gas tank plastic acts as an umbrella and collects all of the steam which in turn keeps the motor from being able to breath air, Your basically sucking in water vapor that is restricting air flow. I have had the same problem. You should try easing off into the stuff I used to bail off in it too. Try to go through it after your bike cools a little.

Or, you make a custom air intake to be completely away from that spot, like a snorkel?

Hmm, I have thought about that and I even called triangle atv they were going to use mine as a prototype but they could not find a way to route the breather or the belt breathers without making it look like a redneck duct tape job.

anyone else have good luck with the dielectric grease thing? I'm leaning more towards the steam/ intake suggestion but dont want to do anything radical like cut holes in the plastic to snorkel it. Plus snorkels are supposed to be illegal on trails in maine.

I always add the dielectric grease to all my quads, and none of them have water issues. Its a good cheap. thing to try, that cant hurt anything.

I had a 400 kodiak, and had the same problem. Thats what happens when yamaha puts all that plastic on the side of the motor to cover it.

I just sold mine and bought a 600 grizz.
