I own a kodiac now, but am wondering about the automatic Kodiac. I guess my biggest question is how well do they respond when put to the test. It sounds like a good system but I don't know if I could get use to not shifting. When I'm making my bike roar through the mud in a low gear I know that I'm generating lots of torque. How does the automatic respond in this situation? Does the engine rev high of does it stay low?

They work GREAT! I'll never go back to a manual tranny again(in a ATV anyway). It's hard to explain, you just have to go for a test drive for yourself. I live in N.B. too so I know what the trails here are like Lots of sloppy deep thick gooey mud!

What is the top end on a 400 auto ? How does it handle in tight trails?

I'm interested in getting a midsize 4x4 quad, I don't want one as big as the griz. I think the Kodiak would be good fit....

The top speed of the 2000 kodiak is around 54-55 GPS. Its got plenty of power to brake the tire loose on trails. It handles great also. It does take a while to get use to not shifting, i like the automatic but i have to have some fun shifting too so i also have a recon.

The Kodiak, even though auto, still has the power and speed to kick the rear end out in 2x2 on demand. I don't miss the gears personally due to this combined with Yamaha features and reliability.

The Kodiak auto sounds really good. Have any of you guys ridden a Sportsman? I like the ride, but they are too big for the tight trail riding (at least for me). They are the best in mud though. Anyone know how the Kodiak compares to it?
