Just bought 2005 Kodiak 400
#1
Hi, name is Bill and I'm new to the board.
just bought a new 2005 Kodiak 400 4x4 Auto and have about 8 hours on it.
I live in the desert in So Ca. and have been riding in the late evenings when cooler and it seems to run great. No overheating problems although the fan kicks on and off at times but never no temp light. I was wondering what modifications from stock should I make or should I just leave it alone? I'm just trail riding and hunting is what I'll be using it for. Also, I will be going up to the Utah mountains later this summer and was wondering if I need to rejet the bike for higher altitude? Thanks!

Hey Bill, welcome to the forums.
If youre going to go 5000 feet or higher, youll need to rejet, or the motor is gonna be running too rich.
Lots of people just cut 1 inch holes in the air box lid, and cover them (duct tape or plastic caps). As the quad goes up in altitude, just keep removing the covers, if it runs too rich (blubbering, non responsive or smoking). Eventually, youll probably need to totally remove the lid, to allow maximum air in. Just dont forget to put the lid back on, as you desend, because running too lean, is much more harmful, then running too rich.
You can also go the route of changing jets, but its not that much fun, to do that on a dusty trail.

I use a 1 inch hole saw, and get the snap in caps from lowes. but duct tape works too.
I cant believe an 05 has any warentee left, unless you purchased the extra warentee, in which case they always seem to find a way to deny any coverage anyway.
You can buy a new cover (on ebay or the dealer), fix up the old one with holes, and if you need to take it in for work, put the new cover back on.
As long as the filter is kept oiled and clean, having more holes only lets in more air, but who knows how the dealer will react to seeing it. I know that once the quad is off warentee, they dont big deal it.

Ok thanks alot for the ideas, when I get out of town I'll check out Lowes on those caps. My '05 was just purchased new from the dealer (old stock) but It comes with the factory warranty!
