Utility Quad Owners, oil / clutch!
#1
I have a 1999 Kodiak and I have done 2 oil changes both by putting Automotive oil (Quaker State) in my Quad. I have been doing some investigating, and found that I should be using Yamalube, because it dosen't contain any anti-friction additives that makes my clutch run better. I have notice that my quad doesn't have the same snap that it did when I first purchased it a year ago.
HAVE I PERMENTLY DAMAGED MY CHUTCH ?, or if I change my oil before my next ride, will the clutch return to normal?
Also, I have noticed a clutch adustment screw on the clutch housing, my manual says its a clutch "free play" adjustment. What is "free play?" If I readjust this set screw will I regain my Peppy 400cc quad?
Thank-you to all who respond!

1999Kodiak,
I put 2000 miles on my 99 Kodiak before I sold it, and never had a problem with it at all! The whole time I owned it I ran Castrol 10w40. The slow clutch engagement your are talking about can be adjusted out with the adjustment screw on the left side of the engine case. Loosen the lock nut and adjust the center screw out(counterclockwise) for faster and more abrupt engagement. If you turn the set screw clockwise it will cause your clutch to engage slowly, and you will feel the slip. Tweak it till you find the spot that works best for you. I set mine fairly tight, it seemed to work better that way. It doesn't have anything to do with the oil that you are using. Remember Yamaha wants you to use Yamalube because they are making a healthy profit on the stuff. Not becaus it is better.
