I sold mine two years ago along with my race ready Thunderace (181RWHP). The Max is a good touring type bike with a relatively comfortable riding position and will hang with most 600cc cafe` bikes. I ran mine at the drags a lot (Island Dragway) and my best run on the stock motor with Kerker exhaust was 11.0 at 124mph (119RWHP). I upgraded the carbs to flat-slides and it made a huge difference on the dyno (145RWHP), but I never got her to the track because I sold it after yet another close call. It has power in any gear, BUT Yamaha should be sued for not upgrading the suspension. The rears suck, the front forks are like tooth picks and the brakes are horrible. If you want to ride fast in a straight line and still be in a comfortable riding position then you really can't beat it. Don't try and corner too fast or you will be very unhappy.

what about the displacement managment shut off system that was never offered to the public? How does it work? and why did the guy sell to get another one like it? doesn't make sence to me. Or maybe he decided to jump ships and modify it himself.

I don't know that much about them but my buddy owned one.
Like DS2 said they were fast in a straight line. I heard they had bad torque squat because of the shaft drive and that was not good when you went to shut them down in the turns.
Also the gas tank held some stupid amount of gas. They had a very short range.
Back in my time they were the fastest thing out there in a straight line................so I wanted one.
