This engine couldn't tell the difference between the original 2 dollar NGK plug and the 15 dollar premium plugs. I just run an NGK D8EA and never had any troubles related to it, you can also use the resistor plug NGK DR8EA and it doesn't really make a difference, just whatever the shop happens to have will work.

There really isn't a difference in performance between the regular and resistor plugs, the resistor is to suppress electrical noise that would interfere with things like radios and computers. In a car you need resistor plugs or you'll get all kinds of noise from the stereo, and it may even make the computer act up, but in a quad there's really no benefit that I can see. I run the non-resistor plugs and don't have any problems with them, so it should work fine for you too.
You can buy the plugs at almost any of the national chain auto parts stores like advance auto and auto zone, or you can get them at any dealer or powersports shop.
I can't say for sure about the condition of your plug wire, but chances are after 19 years of all the abuse a quad goes through the wire has a few cracks in it.
You can get a new performance coil and wire on ebay for half of what a stock yamaha replacement costs if you decide you want to replace it. I was thinking about trying one of these myself, i'm just waiting for an excuse to get one, maybe one day the original will magically catch on fire and melt.
