Default Gizzly/ Cold Starting Problems/ Any suggestions?

I have a 2002 Grizzly 660 with 3000 miles, every time it gets moderately cold (30 or below) can't start it to save my life, can anyone help? In summer when it gets hot , it also overheats, any suggestions? It seems I can't win with this thing.....

It it all stock? No aftermarket exhaust or anything? It sounds like it's running lean to me, but I can't think of anything that would cause it to run excessively lean when it's all stock.

When was the last time the valves were checked/adjusted? They can make cold starting near impossible when the gaps get out of tolerance.

Has it always been like that? Check out your air intake. Make sure the airfilter is sealing up right and check the boot between the carb and the air box. Also make sure there are no cracks or holes in your carb boot to the motor. If the carb is clean, I'm guessing it's the intake boot on the motor.

does it run fine after it's warmed up? (even in the cold) Does it restart right away after it's warmed up too? If so, I'd still have to lean towards it being a valve issue... I'd take it back to the dealer if that's your symptoms and tell them you think they didn't adjust them right...

How much do you use it?
How long does it sit in between?
When is the last time you bought a new spark plug?
What weight of oil do you have in it?
How good is the battery?

Over heating problem
Does it have the heat kit installed?
Otherwise replace the thermostate, yamaha says that if they ever get that hot it damages the thermostate.

Thanks for the useful info cluby. Yes, it has the recall heat kit on it. I didn't think the thermostat was the issue, because I ride with several other Grizzlys and they tend to overheat also. And it's not because of clogged radiators, we are miticulous about cleaning them. And the down time from not being ridden was about a month and a 1/2.

P.S. I will try installing a new thermostat. Thanks again............. Mark

If you are in alot of mud, you may want to use 90 or higher octane fuel not 100 plus or anything. Higher octane fuel burns slow keeping heat down some. Also may want to think of use 20w40 oil. in the summer.

Far as hard starting, if you leave it sit for a month and 1/2 that is a pretty long time, may want to learn how to drain your carb that will help too.
