Make sure both ends of your positive and ground cables are clean and tight.Weak batteries make that exact thing happen often. The voltage drop across is to high (not enought to the cdi) to fire the ign when being loaded with the starter. A new battery will usually fix it. Try jumping it with a running car or truck.

thanks guys i have a new battery and cables but i have been suspicious of wiring problems i have the wiring harness out i will have to tear it open and inspect it carefully. how will i know if my stator is bad my local yamaha tech checked my pickup and said it was fine do you know what kind of volt or ohm readings i should be getting. thanks again.
