If you tried putting the old brake lines back on the master cylinder will they seal correctly because if they do then I would have to say that there is something obviously wrong with the asr brakelines that you got

but shouldn't fluid come out of the master cylinder when I pump it, even if the lines aren't connected at all? I would think that it would pump fluid regardless, and if there was a leak, that's where the fluid would come out. I'm pretty sure this master cylinder is toast.

The outlet end of the master is supposed to be a closed system, and without the line attached and being bled, its not gonna do more than one squirt.
You were saying by holding your finger over the outlet..you could get pressure. If youre getting pressure, fluid is moving. Putting your finger over the outlet, closes the system.
Just for testing purposes, try reattaching the old brake line to the caliper and master, and see if it acts normal.
From what I understand, it sounds like the master isnt bled completely yet. Sometimes Ive removed the master from the bar, with the lid on tight, and hold it so the outlet faces up. Then i bleed it like that( by cracking open the banjo bolt at the master). This ensures the air goes to the highest area, and comes out of the master.
If you need to, you can manually fill the brake lines, before bolting to the master, to minimize how much you need to bleed.
