Grizzly 700 has cold start issues
#71
Has anyone ever confirmed if fuel setting b/c of emissions is different from canada to the US. It was just a hunch I had earlier but now I'm almost certain. My Grizzly 700 with 468km, needed the initial oil changed for new oil, springs around the corner so I thought, put in 20W-40 and leave her inside. Turns out my dad took it out while I was gone and left it outside in -20 to -30 F weather, even in those temperatures, over the next 3 days I left it outside and started it once each day. it fired up 2-3 seconds tops, it basically fires right aways, my EFI fuel settings are at 0 so i don't have that beefed up. Is it really the 5W-30, I know that helps, but I really wonder if settings are different and that's why i'm starting with 20-40. any thoughts on this???

I was just reading most of the posts on here and was going to come in and say, why hasn't the dealer put in 5W30. We hade a guy in northern MN come into our shop with the same problem. No start when cold, we have a exhaust gas analizer and found factory settings too lean and richened up. Starts right up never came back.
Question always come up in the shop around us techs see who can answer this. Why is that that a guy comes in all pissed off, he spent 8000 bucks and his new fourwheeler and it won't start when it's 0 degress or colder, but if there truck or car won't start it's NO BIG DEAL?

Trust me, if my car or truck wouldn't start it would be a big deal. But my GM diesel starts when its zero, my Grizzly doesn't. Kind of a moot point now though, because winter is over, and we've switched over to the bikes for the spring desert racing season, and the Grizzly gets to sit in the garage until next winter. Hopefully lighter weight oil will make a difference when the time comes.

Hey Bubba, glad you started this thread about these 700's not starting and running well in cold temps. Maybe someone will log in and have a fix for this problem! I also have a post over at GrizzlyCentral hoping to get an answer over there. Dog

If someone sees a garage full of "techs" are standing around pondering such conundrums they should be running as fast as they could from that service department and taking their business elsewhere.
If an owner of a dealership has a service manager who has the same sort of attitudes he also should probably look into staff changes at both the tech levels and Service Manager positions.

I know some shops don't seem to care, that's not my point here. When we hade the guy come in with his that didn't start, we went right to the phone and called yamaha. I always call the manufactor, how are they sapose to know what is happening out in the field if they don't get input.
Today's new fuel injected products and assories create draw on the batteries, a battery tender should be installed on anyones machine that sits for over a week with out riding.

1st off Yamaha claims in the ads and on thier website that the Grizzlty is the "Cold start solution" (do what you say)
2nd My 7 year carburated Kawasaki starts every time at the exact same time and conditions, first try, when the Grizzly wouldn't start without up to 16 attempts.
3rd My 92 Ford F150 starts "every day" when I go to work and I keep it outside. It starts in below zero temps. It is a big deal if my truck won't start!
4th Every time I had trouble starting, temps WASN'T 0 degrees out, it had warmed up into the 30s. It just so happened to be in the single digits over night. Guess what when I'm up hunting and I want to use my $$$$ new bad Grizzly and it won't start, it becomes a piece of ...., I see cheaper ATVs and older ATVs still using carburators start, what would you say if you spent that kind of money and your new Gizzly was the only one that didn't start? Ever heard of ice fishing, hunting?
6th The Grizzly is probably to most expensive ATV on the market, it better live up to it's price tag.
Sorry to flame out but this email is an example of why most of us hate stealers (dealers) they take your money and run. Thank god my dealer doesn't think like you.
Well I didn't do very good at being nice.....sorry :-(
PS my Grizzly was fixed by a dealer who cared and has restored my faith.

I didn't see your latest response prior to my last post. At the other occurances, yes unit set for several days without battery tender, which is "now" installed.
Your theory might explain why the thinner oil is helping. It's easier to turn engine over easier and faster with thinner oil. Using a battery tender might help with thicker oil crank speeds, when stored for periods of time.
Note I've not had any starting issues since oil change and FI adjustment to about 16. Since repair I've tested starting in temps that are below what I had orginal problems with, down to 5 degrees. Now I feel I could use this ATV to plow snow or go ice fishing!
Unit is always starting now on first attempt and I'm not using battery tender.
Sorry for flame, it just took me back to how I felt the first morning of ownership of my new Griz and it took 16 attempts to start! NOT a good way to began a experiance with you new super expensive ATV. Good thing tech didn't simply just tell me that I shouldn't expect to start in 30 degrees I'd have called a lawyer in a heartbeat!

We get news letters from all the manufactures, BRP states that poor cold weather starting is a problem, they claim it's poor fuel.
My first post I was a little upset at the dealer where you got you service at, they should have told you to change to 5w30 right away instead of you coming back all those other times.
I agree you fourwheeler should start brand new or older than the hills. It is frustating on ouer part as being techs, because the manufacturs claim that there not having problems.

I got a brand new grizz 700 a few weeks ago....it has been between 2 and 8 deg and it starts right up.
I could not be happier with the ATV...it is by far the best all around ATV made and I have ever ridden.
I wish you luck on figuring out your problem!
I am running stock pod setting and stock oil.
Has anyone tried a diff octane other than 89 for the cold weather starts....try 93 octane...
