Default please help raptor 660 gas dripping from carb.

Hi all I have just purchased a 2001 660 that has a 2002 tranny, hmf slip on,stage 1 jet kit,K&N filter. And the problem is there is fuel dripping from the carb area. I have not taken it apart yet but I can not really tell where it is coming from and the whole bowl area on both carbs are wet. I would not think that the gasket on the bowl would go bad on both carbs at the same time. So If anyone has had this happen and nows how to fix it please let me know. And is there anything to try before tearing them apart. Thanks alot.

Since you just purchased the bike and it may have been sitting for a while, it is not uncommon for the fuel to varnish in the carbs resulting in a float getting stuck. With the float stuck it will not shut off the flow of fuel coming into the carb and result in the situation you described. Sometimes you will get lucky if you ride it it will loosen up the floats and remedy the problem. If you want you can also run some "good quality" injector cleaner thu it like Chevron's "techron" and this will sometimes clean it up enough to keep you from having to rip off the carbs and clean them.

Well I beleive it is the stuck float after looking a little closer. So I beleive I am going to have to remove the carbs and clean them after all. Is there anything to look out for when removing the plastic and carbs. And would taking the float and jets out and sparying them down with carb cleaner do the trick. thanks alot.

make sure the float needles are free moving and well cleaned. If it has been sitting for a while they tend to get stuck and gas leaks out the overflow not to mention it sputters and backfires. Spray the jets thoroughly but I'd leave them in place rather than pulling them out.

Ok I have another question. I took off the carbs and did a good cleaning. I was looking for something that would make the bowl over fill with gas and did not find anything. So in my manual it says the floats should set 13mm from the gasket surface. Well mine were 10mm in the rear and 6mm in the front at an angle of course. So I set them to factory specs of 13mm. But I am having a hard time beleiving that the factory was this far off. So is the 13mm setting right. I have read about that clear hose trick but wouldn't the factory be more trust worthy. Anyone ------thanks again
