Grizzly 660 front cv boot replacement
Hey all,
I planned on changing my outer cv boot today but ran into a road block. I read somewhere (CVMan's website from eBay) that the "easiest" way to do the outer was to pull the whole axle and remove the inner boot and then replace the outer. All was going as planned until I had to pull the bearing from the inner. That sucker would not budge. I removed all rings, etc and according to instructions, it should have just slipped off. No go. I took the case and bearing apart. I clamped the axle in my vise and hammered on it with a 5 pound sledge and got the race to move but it would not come off. What am I missing? I may put the whole thing back together and trying something else. I went this route to avoid the hub nut (I couldn't get it to budge). It's all laying in pieces on my garage floor so any suggestions would be appreciated!

I am trying the exact same operation with my 2000 kodiak and would appreciate the same advice. I am changing the inner boot and have the cv joint out of the front diff, but how do I get the joint off the axle shaft to slide the inner boot on? thank you for any input.
I couldn't get the hub nut to budge either (impact or arm-strong).

Hey Lenny,
I got that hub nut off with a 4 foot pipe and a breaker bar. My wife had one of those steering wheel lock bars which I lodged on the hub and braced against the floor. I put one foot on it and pulled with the pipe. Came right off.
Make sure there isn't a cotter pin. The Grizz is notched so you have to bang out the indent with a hammer and screwdriver. As for the inner joint race, I took that to a motorcycle shop and they got it off for me with a torch, ball hammer, and foot long punch. They put the axle in a vice and punched it off while heating it. Once I had the boot off and replaced, I clamped the axle in my vise and hammered it back on with a large deep socket that was bigger then the axle. Slipped it back together.

Thanks Gabby,
I managed to get mine off as well, It actually went quite easy after I went back to the drawing board and put the crosspien hammer to it. I luckily didn't have the grief that it sounds like you had, I was able to drop the lower control arm out and pull the joint from the diff and all went pretty smooth after a few taps of the hammer. all is back together and she works great. Thanks to all those on this forum for the excellent technical advise. Wouldn't have tried it without y'all.
cheers.
