What are common problems with a Raptor carb?
#1
Hello fellas,
I have a 2001 Raptor 660R. I've repaired the commom problems with this year like the one way starter clutch, rear end hub and bearings (that was fun).
Fuel is leaking from the overflow valve at the bottom of the carb through the hose and all over the engine. I checked the screw on that valve and it was tight. I've never messed with a carburator before but I do have a Yamaha cd-rom repair manual for parts description and location.
Has anyone ever run into a similar problem? What are the basic carb problems with this year's Raptor? Is there a kit I can purchase for basic carburator maintenance on my year Raptor?
Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Thanks for the advice. I believe it was just leaking from one side only at least in the begining. I haven't riding my bike in like 2 or 3 months. But I think one of my buddies said it might be a stuck float too or maybe a bad o-ring.
So what are the scenarios for fuel coming out of only 1 side or both sides? If it's just a stuck float could a good cleaning clear everything up? It might need some stuff replaced in it too what are common things that need to be replaced and maintaned inside the carburator in this bike?
any suggestions.....thanks again...

im not too farmiliar with the 660 but if you take the bowl off the bottom of the carb and spray the helloutta it with carb cleaner it should be ok. just make sure the float moves up and down freely. if the bike sat for 2-3 months thats plenty of time for the gas to break down and varnish in the bowl and mess things up. give the carbs a good cleaning and let us know.

Thanks for the advice Lucas. I'll try doing what you say. Taking out that part of the carb should be fairly easy right?
Are there other parts in the carb that frequently go bad or need maintanance?

yeah it should be easy, the bowl is held on with allen head screws usually. like i said, im not too farmiliar with the location and accessability of the carbs. as long as you keep your air filter clean and maintained and maybe run some berrymans b12 chemtool in your gas (get it at walmart) every few tanks the carbs should stay clean.its a fuel additive/carb cleaner and will help stabalize the fuel when it sits for a while. i take mine apart and clean it thourougly once a year, and when i do it its usually spotless when i open it up. hopefully someone with a 660 can help explain the carbs better than me! i wouldnt think that there is any particular thing that goes wrong with the carbs, just keep up on the basic maintenance and your machine will be good to you. pick up a clymer manual for your machine its a ton of help.

I just done a search under "raptor carb" under thread title. I also checked the "Yamaha" forum option and recieved a ton of info that goes back years. Should be everything you need to know. Good luck.
