700 FI MAINTENANCE REPORT (3200 MILES)
700 FI MAINTENANCE REPORT (3200 MILES)
I thought that I would publish the results of my most recent maintenance on the 700 FI Grizzly. I will not labor the report with the mundane. I will only comment on that which may be of interest to you.
I first checked all the diagnostic codes. D08 was the only point of interest. The value was 4.4 and page 6-11 of the Service Manual indicated the it was ?OVERTURNED?. Page 9-15 indicated that ?IT WAS LESS THAN 65*?. This is not the first time that I found inconsistencies in this manual. After some thought, I concluded that page 6-11 was in error.
The spark plug was a little in the light side. I adjust POD injector setting to 25 from 0. I also think this will help with over heating as summer approaches.
Check the valves and they were the same as 1600 miles ago. Intakes were .004-.005 and exhausts were .007-.008. There was a past posting that indicated concern about which way the would go out of adjustment. I plan to republish at next maintenance events.
I ride in a dust (DESERT ) area and it looks like air filter cleaning is about 300 400 miles. I use the OEM filter.
Front brake pads have .212 material remaining and fronts have .175 material remaining from new.
Rear OEM tires will need to be replaced in the next couple hundred miles. Front are about half consumed.
There are no drive shaft universal joints to be lubed.
The grease fittings on the rear knuckles were a problem. It is difficult to get grease gun fittings on them. They are also a bastard size.
Page 3-40 of the Service Manual has a flow chart to check the ?Coolant Temperature Warning Light?. This chart indicates that I have a malfunction. Of notable interest is that the fan comes on when the machine heats up, but the warning light does not. I will pursue this and advise. A QUESTION FOR OTHER 700 FI OWNERS IS, ?DOES YOUR COOLANT WARNING LIGHT COME ON IN LOCK STEP WITH THE COOLING FAN??
I have adjusted the ?Drive Shifter Linkage? several times in the recent past. The motivation was to solve the ?Sputtering? in HIGH and the ?R? light flickers. Most of the posts that I have read recently indicate that the remedy to this problem is to adjust the linkage. I have tried this many times with no success. I looked at the circuit diagram and it became apparent the Reverse switch was the problem. This is an intermittent problem and is difficult for that reason. I checked the Reverse switch for function and it was inconsistent on the bench. My diagnosis procedure was to place a jumper circuit on the Reverse switch with a toggle switch. The next time I experienced the problem, I toggled the jumper circuit and the problem was gone. I have concluded that the Reverse switches in these machines are defective. They are subject to heat and vibration. My position is based on personal experience and all the press that I have read on this subject. I have a new one on order, but believe it will eventually fail. I will install the new one and maintain the toggle circuit, in anticipation of the eventual failure.
