Default PLZ HELP - 98 Warrior

Ok so it all starts here....a 1998 yamaha warrior. Bought it for 200 dollars and was told one day it just up and decided to stop runnin right, has a supertrapp pipe which it ran fine with and a stock flter also, no mods to the engine.....Ok so i can get it to idle good and even rev to like maybe a 1/4 throttle and than it sputters and backfires and u get no more rpm out of it, so awt would anybodies first thought b carb or timing? i thought carb so i bought a carb kit iit came with a 120 stock main jet a bigger needle, pilot jet etcc.... the warrior had a 145 in it and i was told to adjust the air screw 2/12 turns or 3 jus tto play with it, also to have the needle set in the middle. I did all tht and it still sputters and backfires well actually the backfire went away when i had the 145 in and i tuned it but it still sputtered and i couldnt gain rpm's DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHATS GOING ON?!?!? LOL

When i first got my warrior it did that and thats y i got it cheep, but this old told me to put 1 cup (like measuring cup) of lacker thinner per Gallon and run it al like idle for a half hour to an hour and it will clear the carb and damn near everything else. So i did and it ran fine ever since also check plug good gas and the ground wire on the shifter for reverse it that is loose your done

Common problem on warriors is getting a tear in the boot that connects the carb to the motor. Give it a good inspection and make sure its ok. That will cause it to run like that. If its torn they cost about $50 from a dealer.

Im sure others will give you some other ideas on what it could be. Good Luck

Mess around with your parking brake on the left handlebar. If it thinks the parking brake is on it won't let it rev up. There is a set of switches on the left handle bar.. one for brake and one for clutch. Make sure you trace the correct one before messing with the wires.

umm ok well i tired the boot test by spraying carb cleaner around the boot to see if the idle jumps at all and it doesnt and i checked for leaks etc... NONE, my plug is brand new, the carb is clean as a whistle i had the entire thing apart and air hosed it, also i did some research andd i checked the timing, it was dead on. so as i took a 17mm wrench and turned the motor over i could hear air seaping somwhere on hte inside, and i noticed when the quad runs and i give it gas it sprays gas out the back of the carb liek air is pushing it out? so i got to thinking and im pretty shure the valves are bad, when i removed the covers and turned the engine over with the actual starter i could hear a little ping? but im going to try the other things too jsut in case but im ordering valves tonight.......does anybody know the adjustments??? thanks for the help if anyone lives in pa id love to catch up and rideee sometime , John

Before you spend any money or really tear into the engine at all, do a compression test. That can tell you a lot. If it helps, I can also give you a link to download a service manual for it, which will have all your instructions for teardown, troubleshooting, and specs for compression, valve adjustment, etc.

Where are you at in PA? I'm from the south-central area, but we do most of our riding up in the coal region, there's some great riding up that way.
