Mine starting doing this wierd sputtering/popping thing. Almost like the reverse limiter kicking in while in forward. It wouldn't even move over 5 mph or go up the slightest grade but idled fine. A guy with us took the air filter out of the box and revved it while capping off the intake to the carb and it cleared right up. We figured it was a particle of dirt that got stuck in a jet or something.
It has done it one other time since and was resolved by the same method so I am wondering if it really was dirt in the carb?
One thing for sure if I remove the air box lid I can smell fuel most times and when I rev it with the air cleaner removed I get some fuel coming out the back of the carb.
Is this normal?

I'm not a big mechanic, but are you sure the choke was turned off, and did it do it sitting still when you pressed the thottle or only under a load. let me know, because I'm going to be getting one this week. Almost sounds like the air mixture is out of adjustment.

Choke was off.
It wouldn't rev if you try to put it past a certain throttle opening. Any more than 1/2 throttle. Almost like any time more fuel would be required, like main jet flow.
This is an intermittent problem. If it was a mixture adjustment it would do it all the time, no?

Maybe you should bring it back to a dealer and have them check out and clean the carbs, something sounds wrong. Maybe a jet is sticking for whatever reason.
