warrior smoking like a freight train!!!
#1
i recently rescued a 2000 yamaha warrior from being junked...like seriously junked like in a dumpster.it didnt run when i got it but i threw a battery in it and put oil and gas in it and it fired right up.thats one problem down.now for the other stuff.its smokes like all mighty hell! there is a knock comming from the top end i believe.i pulled out the spark plug, it was caked in oil and crap.im guessing the bike needs a top end rebuild? that would prolly stop the smoking.but what about the knocking? it gets worse as you rev the engine.could it be valves? or something else. any info would be great. thanks alot.

My uncles 300ex was having similar major problems. After we rebuilt it twice, we got smart and bought a brand new 300ex motor off of ebay for $600 shipped. Sounds like you would be getting a deal to have a warrior for $600.

The piston can make that knocking sound if the rings are warn really bad.. Bad valve guides can also cause some weird sounds and smoke. The ticking could also be as simple as a valve adjustment. I would start out by taking the top end and cylinder jug off. Remove the piston/pin and see how much play you got in the crank and if it turns over nice. Install just the piston pin and see what kind of play it has also. If the crank and the rest of the quad is in pretty good shape I would spend the money on having the cylinder bored out to the next size over and have new valve guides installed (if needed). Having the head and cylinder inspected by a engine shop is the best money you could spend. Try to find a real engine machine shop and NOT a dealer. Most dealers outsource the work to a local shop anyways.. at twice the price.

What color is the smoke, blue/black? if its blue its burning oil which prolly means it needs new rings, if its black it would be best just to buy a new engine lol, also have you checked the air filter a grizzly bear might jump out though.
