Big Bear 400, loosing power, HELP!!!

I don't know whats happening, I can ride for 30 to 40 minutes and it runs great, but sometimes I can ride only 10 minutes and it starts to spit, sputter, backfire and has even completely quit running. Then sometimes it won't run right until everything cools down and then other times it sputters for a minute or two and takes off just fine. I am confussed..........
I have checked fuel lines, drained tank, blew out vent hose. I was told that the coil could be overheating, but if that were the case, it seems it would be hot to the touch, not! And if it were the coil, I don't think it would sputter for a minute or two and then run fine. Today I ran an entire tank of gas out of it and not once did it give me any problem.
I talked to the local shop mechanic and he didn't have any suggestions other than to leave it with him and let him check it out, but if it doesn't act up when he is checking it out he said he doesn't think he will find a problem. Might have to keep it a while.
Has anyone had a similar problem, got any suggestions.
