There are two possibilities. The first and most likely is that when they were rebuilding they didn't have the sprockets for the timing aligned and its allowing the exhaust valve to open before the fuel is fully burned. It builds up in the exhaust and ignites occasionally shooting out flames. This isn't a big problem IF and only IF it didn't bend the valves. If it did its not worth much.
The second thing it could be is that its way over carburated and is getting too much gas. The motor can't burn it all so it gets sent into the exhaust where it burns. Minor re-jetting or carb rebuild, not too expensive but it can be time consuming.

Bring a compression tester (the screw in type with an air valve). Put the motor on top dead center (with the pistion all the way up and both valves closed), put it in first gear, block the wheels so the motor can't turn, remove the spark plug, screw in the compression tester, apply around 30 psi of air and see if it leaks out. It should take a long time for the pressure to go down (at least 15 min.). If it doesn't hold the pressure then the valves are not seating and you should run, not walk away.
If you don't know what I mean either take along a mechanic or bring it to a shop. It shouldn't cost more than $35, tell them you want them to to a leak-down test on the motor, and that you think the valves may be bent.

If it runs good, it probably has an exhaust leak (at the joint??) and that will let it suck air and back fire. If thats the case, it will only do it when you let off the throttle.</end quote></div>
He said its shooting flames, not backfiring. Although the guy on the phone could have meant backfiring, that would change things.

Back firing shoots flames. My Chevelle used to look like a flame thrower when I'd let off the throttle due to a crack in my header tube pipe.
11 times out of 10, if anything serious is wrong with this bike, it will show it in the performance. If the bike idles good and has good power, nothing major is wrong.
