2002 Raptor 660 Starter Issues
Well i finally decided to give in and buy my own quad. I found a raptor 660 locally and at a good price. I love it. The only issue i have is quite often it will not start. The battery is good. What happens is the starter spins healthy but never engages the engine. I usually have a buddy push and bump, but this gets old. I was just going to give in and take it to a shop because i dont know too much, but i was wondering if there was anything i could try. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps. And please explain how to do ne thing, cause ive never had it apart. Still learning. :-). thanks again.

Your starter one-way clutch is going, going, GONE, a very common Raptor ailment. Needs replacing. About $150 to $250 in parts. Only requires removing the left side cover and the flywheel. About 1-2 hours if you are the least bit mechanically inclined. Good treatise on the job at Raptortranny.com
Replace the stock unit with a L&A or L&L unit, it will be the last time you need to do it.
When you remove your old one-way clutch, look at the surface of the gear that the clutch grabs. If it's the least bit messed up (not mirror smooth), you need to replace it too. If you don't it will just eventually grind up the new one-way clutch, and you have to do it all over again. Adding the gear is what takes the price from 150 to ~250. If the gear's ok, all you need is the clutch for $150. The sooner you do this, the less likely you'll have to replace the gear too. It gets ground up trying to start when the one-way clutch is beginning to fail.
Good Luck!
