Raptor 660 wont start
#1
Ok people looking to see if anyone has encounterd this one. I had the 03 quad running moving it around and parked it 2 weeks ago. Last weekend went to start it and it would not. Can smell the fuel. I pulled the plug wire and checked for spark I have none. So where do we go from here? I had no indication that there was a problem.

Not many components in the ignition circuit. CDI, coil, plug and wires. I guess you have to check all of them. If you are checking the spark at the plug, it could be a bad plug. I have seen this a few times. The ignition system is pretty reliable on the raptor.
Good luck

I left mine for a month one time during a very busy time of the year. It wouldn't start for a while, but I fiddled with the choke and ignition, it eventually started. My gas had been left on and there was a lot of bad gas in there.
Maybe you need a new spark plug.

I tested the spark w/a differnt plug. I also put a voltage tester on the plug wire. Maybe bad coil? I also disconected the tether switch attached to the coil to rule out the tether breaking the circut.

Tether switch? Is this aftermarket? Check the wiring where this was added.
Also, make sure the thumb kill switch is off. I think the raptor won't turn over if this is the case, but cant remember.
Look for cracks in the coil. They don't usually go out. Make it is grounded to the frame. Check for corrosion around the mounting bolts.

As far as I know the tether is aftermarket. When the thumb kill switch is on it will not turn over. I will go over the tether wiring and check the coil. Let you know what happens. Hope to get to it tomorrow.

I had a similiar problem with my son's Raptor. After spending hours swapping out the CDI box, ohming out all the components, checking all the wires for continuity....an accidental disconnect/reconnect solved it....Can't explain why as nobody can figure out what caused it...so try this....
get into where your magneto connectors are(located left side behind where rear plastic meets front...disconnect the large round connector(3 wires)and try starting. After running..plug it back in and enjoy. His Rappy has been fine since. Hope this works and saves you time and aggravation.
If you don't have a wiring schematic I have one I could send you.

I did an Ohm test on the coil this weekend. I am pulling .4 to .5 Ohm on the Primary and 18.something Ohms on the secondary. I guess it is not supposed to be more than .28 and like 5 for the secondary. I got those numbers from the Service manual. So I guess I will not know for sure if all it is is the coil till I get a new one.
