Routine maintenance on a '05 Kodiak
Some people use a pipe wrench or channel locks to adjust the shocks. I purchased a special wrench . I could not find a wrench sold by Yamaha that was made for the Kodiak. For some reason they made them different than other quads and never made a wrench that fits. The one I got was not even a shock adjusting wrench, but it works.
As for the "best" way to clean the air filter depends on your needs. You can buy the prepackaged spray cleaner and spray filter oil. Very easy and kind of expensive. You could clean it with gas and then soapy water, then rinse water and re-oil it with 30 wt. motor oil. I was told by a long time motorcycle rider to use the gas and soapy water and rinse water method and then put it in a zip lock bag with the motor oil. Just squeeze it for a while until all the water is squeezed out of the filter. Then squeeze out the excess oil.
