Default newbie with a 250 Timberwolf 1994

Hi All,
I just got my first 4 wheeler a 1994 Yamaha TimberWolf 2x4 runs great but no manual or other info with it looking for help locating the numbers plus what type of oil and filter p/n to use. basic maintenance tips .

The guy I bought it from said he works on atv's and had a few in his yard fixing for other people, he said the oil that he uses is 20-50 weight forgot the brand but it was not synthetic. Does 20-50 hurt anything or is he trying to hide a problem?

like I said it seems to run great and I have already riden it pretty hard.

Oh, it does have a loose steering shaft well it wobbles when you push up or down on handlebars . does a bushing or bearing go into the steering head ( thats what I call it) or stem? area.
anyone have a manual I can buy or get photo copied

thanks
and Sorry for the long first post

The manual calls for 10W-30. I have run 5w-40 Rotella synthetic and 10W-30 valvoline high milage synthetic with no problems. There is a two piece ring bearing on the upper column that can wear. Some play is normal.

We put full synthetic in a 250 Yamaha Moto4( same motor as yours) and 350 Big Bear and both ATV seem to shift much smoother. You have to use a Yamaha oil filter so your dealer will make sure you get the right one. He will try to sell you that yamalube oil, Its not a full synthetic engine oil but it does have the full synthetic price tag. LOL

Thanks for the replies.
I found out the oil the first owner was using is Maxum 20-50 motorcycle oil 4cycle

also found that the split seals in the steering at the top were missing and that is where the play was coming from, I fixed it with 2 new seals now I was going to use a K&N 143 oil filter.
Are these any good? it is about 80 cents more

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>I found out the oil the first owner was using is Maxum 20-50 motorcycle oil 4cycle </end quote></div>

Is Maxum a dinosaur oil or a FULL (not those blends with 10% synthetic oil) synthetic.

Any filter thats the correct fit is good.

Now yamaha offers a sythetic, the stuff I use in mine is 20w40 yama-lube but now they have changed to a 10w40 yamalube or a 10w40 synthetic.
